The nights of January 17th and January 18th were perfect for hoarfrost, a situation where the air is just at freezing and is saturated with moisture (100% relative humidity). The temperature was exactly at the triple point of water where vapor, liquid and ice are in equilibrium, so the smallest imperfection of discontinuity on a surface formed a nucleation point for ice crystals. This happens from time to time, but never, as far as I know, two days in a row!
